Director Ingrid Solberg spent two winters on board with Captain Arne Moe, filming every crossing. She came back with forty hours of footage, almost no interviews and a festival deadline six weeks away.
Finding the story in the silence
With so little dialogue, the edit had to carry the story through rhythm and sound. I built the film around the crossings themselves: the engine starting, the same view of the harbor, the light fading a little more each week until the sun disappears entirely.
- 01
Assembly in ten days
Every usable shot logged and grouped by crossing, then a three hour assembly to find the shape of the film.
- 02
Rough cut to fine cut
Four rounds with the director, bringing the film from three hours down to twenty-two minutes.
- 03
Color grade
A palette that follows the polar night, moving from washed out gold to deep blue as the film goes on.
Northbound premiered in Tromsø, went on to nine festivals and became a Vimeo Staff Pick the week it went online.
